Another day of record-breaking speed skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics ended with some Double Dutch. The Netherlands duo of Femke Kok and Jutta Leerdam stood on the podium together after Kok won the gold in women’s 500 meters while setting an Olympic record and Leerdam won the silver.
The Dutch have traditionally been the dominant force in Olympic speed skating, reflecting a nation built around its waterways, and have now taken a firm grip on short track, the upstart younger branch of the sport.
Skaters Daria Danilova and Michel Tsiba qualified for the Games, but their country told them they weren’t going. Then a fan started an online drive to get them to Italy.
